Music, Sports, Guest Lists | April 8, 2010

Featured Guest List by Martellus Bennett

Martellus Bennett – also known as Marty B – is a hulking tight end entering his third season with the Dallas Cowboys, where he plays behind, and sometimes alongside, perennial All-Pro Jason Witten. Drafted by the Cowboys in the second round out of Texas A&M, where he also played basketball, Bennett is already a fierce blocker and has the potential to be a major weapon in the passing game for Dallas. Marty B is also a hip hop enthusiast and part-time MC. Along with his pals Shaud Money and Chris Jobe, he formed the hip hop collective known as the Moonshine Kids. You can stream and download Marty's new mixtape 8 Degrees Cooler Than U below. To watch music videos from Marty and his crew from the Moonshine Kids, check out his YouTube channel. Marty B - 8 Degrees Cooler Than U

Music is really important to us. Everyone's listening to their iPod before games, and when we come in at halftime, guys go straight back to their iPods before the coaches come back in with adjustments. When we're not listening to our iPods, sometimes we'll argue about what to listen to. We have a DJ come out to practice at times. As a team, we listen to everything; with the older stuff and slow jams, we have sing-a-longs and stuff. (Running back) Tashard Choice is usually our DJ, but (offensive lineman) Flozell Adams will snatch the iPod anytime he's tired of listening to music; he doesn't care if anyone else is enjoying it. I personally love music and think there's a song for every mood you could possibly be in - at practice or a game, or anytime. But, the right song gets me pumped up for the game and some songs make me want to play even harder.

Here are just a few of the favorites:

Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling

1

Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling

This was our universal game song this year. It was played by far the most of any song. The team even made a video with the players singing and dancing to it, and we played it before every game during warm-ups. For some reason, this song makes everyone feel good - fans and players. It brings a smile to everyone's face.

Watch the video shown before games on the giant screen at Cowboys Stadium below.

Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys - Empire State of Mind

2

Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys - Empire State of Mind

You don't have to be from New York for this song to get you going. Hov and Alicia Keys always have everyone singing and rapping during warm-ups. It's just something about the beat and his flow that makes you get into it. Jay-Z's one of the dopest that has ever been in the game, and Alicia Keys really did her thing on it.

Curren$y - 16 Switches

3

Curren$y - 16 Switches

This one is my personal favorite. Curren$y is my favorite artist right now and this song is just so smooth and fresh. I'm the only one on the team that really jams him, probably because I'm a true hip hop head. I really like to listen to all different stuff out there, and I can relate to him. The way he lives life, and the stories he tells in his music, are similar to things that happen to me.

Lil Wayne - Swag Surfin (Remix)

4

Lil Wayne - Swag Surfin (Remix)

"Swag Surfin" is a song that has everybody dancing in the locker room. (Defensive end) Marcus Spears and the D-line love dancing to it. Wayne is dope; he's one of the best out right now. I like him, but I don't listen to him that much. A lot of the guys jam him hard. And his mixtape version of this song is correct.

Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire

5

Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire

This is (quarterback Tony) Romo's favorite. A lot of the black guys hate it but the white guys - even the trainers - love this stuff. Romo and Witten and a lot of the guys will sing along. It's pretty funny; it's like how we get into it when we hear our favorite rap song. So it's cool. I just shake my head. It reminds me of The Beverly Hillbillies.

Drake featuring Trey Songz - Successful

6

Drake featuring Trey Songz - Successful

Players love this one because they can relate to it. Tashard Choice and (wide receiver) Patrick Crayton really love it, but pretty much all the guys will sing out loud to this song. I think Drake is cool, maybe a little overhyped. But Wayne signed him so I won't say anything until I hear his album.

Jay-Z - Public Service Announcement (Interlude)

7

Jay-Z - Public Service Announcement (Interlude)

This is one of Jay-Z's classic tracks - everybody loves it. This song just gets you fired up on or off of the field. We listen to it a lot. But all of Hov's stuff is good to me. It's true hip hop.

Roscoe Dash featuring Soulja Boy - All the Way Turnt Up

8

Roscoe Dash featuring Soulja Boy - All the Way Turnt Up

Every time this song comes on it always has everyone up, jumping, running around, and bobbing their heads. Soulja Boy is always good for having a track to get you hyped. This is one of the songs we have played at the stadium before games and everyone enjoys it, the players and the fans.

Bone Thugs-n-Harmony - Tha Crossroads

9

Bone Thugs-n-Harmony - Tha Crossroads

(Running back) Marion Barber plays Bone Thugs-n-Harmony all day long. It's like all he has are Bone Thug CDs. We are always saying, "Cut that off!" But he always keeps playing it. Nobody else likes them. "See you at the crossroads ... so you won't be lonely!"

Papa Roach - Last Resort

10

Papa Roach - Last Resort

This is a universal choice on the team. We try and keep it even - we play five rap songs and then one rock-n-roll song. This way everybody is happy. I actually like this song, though. It gets me fired up and ready to pick up a car and run. It's a good song; the guitars and drums are dope.

Rick Ross featuring John Legend - Magnificent

11

Rick Ross featuring John Legend - Magnificent

"Magnificent" is just a feel good song. It's a personal favorite of mine because it was the song I was jamming before I caught that ball to win the game against the Redskins in 2008. Rick Ross is dope, and everybody on the team pretty much likes this song - anything that has a mixture of R&B and rap, they dig.

Watch the touchdown Marty's talking about at the start of the video below, which happens to be set to another version of the fourth entry on his Top 13.

Bob Marley - Three Little Birds

12

Bob Marley - Three Little Birds

(Linebacker) DeMarcus Ware loves any song by Bob Marley. I listen to Marley as well. I think his music just makes you want to make a change and be better. He's loved by all on the team. His music calms you down when you're overhyped. So it's good before games - after warm-ups when we're waiting to go back out on the field.

Free Reign - Tragedy

13

Free Reign - Tragedy

They're an up-and-coming group that really pumps you up. People just have to give them a chance. With the combination of (offensive tackle) Marc Colombo's singing, (guard) Leonard Davis on bass, and (guard) Cory Procter on the drums, they make you want to do something crazy. We listened to them all the time during camp.

Guess Flozell won't be cutting off the music anymore - he was released last week. Also, that Curren$y album cover is awesome.

Hate most of the music but love the list. BTW, where is the "Captain Crunch Rap"?

I'm with you. This is pretty funny, but the Cowboys taste in music leaves a little something to be desired.

Agree with Jay. It's all about the Capt'n Crunch. The Top 13 does say favorite songs of the Dallas Cowboys. I would think that would include songs by the Dallas Cowboys.

The thought of 60 grown-ass men enjoying that terrible Black Eyed Peas song is pretty hilarious.

The Cowboys are the worst.
